Unwrapped!
Today's Christmas! Woot! This morning I awoke to a video chat. I've been streaming live video today for my family in different parts of the country. My husband and his family opened presents and my mom called just to chat. It's been a good morning so far.

I'm far from a believer, but I was once intimately involved in believing in some thing bigger than my self, a soul, the savor, and a life after. That aside, the hardest part of life is getting through the surprise of losing a loved one. Moving forward, being headstrong, and resilient while suffering a tragedy. Today I called a friend. This wasn't someone who I have known long, or even know well, but I had to call them today. I think the hardest thing about this phone call was calling on Christmas. A few days ago my friend lost someone, she lost her husband.

It's been awhile. I have been looking back at my videos from last year and thinking; "It's been a year!?" Already, one whole year. Amazing! I've learned so much about the YouTubes and I cannot believe that it's been a year. Only more time will tell how well I keep up with this silliness. Anywhoshkins, this year I gots a real tree!

Notable History
This is a little late (I'm posting this on 12.15, but this entry is dated 12.1).

A new trend I would like to be a part of is Notable History. On November 1 2011, I noticed something quite unusual; the death of a sort of notable person. At least notable enough to put it on Wikipedia and show in the News Headlines. I was, at the time, researching a little history and found a listing of birth and death dates. Now the world cannot predict who will become famous, so I have been following the deaths of notable historical figures. It is very strange, to learn about someone who a day ago was living. So far, I think the most notable person, has been Steve Jobs. Though, he was of no real interest to me, it is interesting nonetheless to follow the story of his life after his death and watch how quickly his story surrenders to oblivion. Let's not forget.
So, I challenged myself to keep up with the 'notable' deaths for one month in order to learn more about the world and the trend continues...

The list of Desire

Apparently, I am supposed to make a list for Christmas. Each year I attempt to think of something to write down. My usual request is coloring books and markers. Only one person has taken this seriously and I was pleasantly surprised with a Homosapien coloring book. Amazing!

Thanks!
Well, it's been two days of cooking and 24hrs without interacting with the public. I'd say this year's Thanksgiving has been a resounding success!

On the other hand; if we joined the money we donate to campaign funds for presidential candidates the country would be out of debt immediately. If I could control $10 going straight to eliminating the country's debt, I would do it today. Heck! I would donate $20!

Fancy Dress Party
If I had to choose a favorite Holiday, I guess I would choose Halloween. I have fond memories of my father risking our lives to brave snow storms to get to grandma's house for trick-or-treating. My mother used to dress my sister and I in costumes made by hand. One year I was a mouse and my sister was Woody Woodpecker's Girlfriend; oddly specific. Now that I think about it; we always had these oddly specific costumes and I've never stopped picking out those costumes that are common, but completely unique. It's the stupid kind of specific, not unlike Woody Woodpecker's Girlfriend, that keeps me thinking of the very best costume. Inevitably, though, I end up not wearing a costume or wearing the same costume year after year.
This year I was invited to a fancy dress party. I was told that a crazy clown and the characters from Clue would be dressed for the occasion, and so the search for the perfect costume began. Honestly, I didn't have any idea until a couple hours before I had to leave for this party. I was really struggling to decide. Should I wear the last two years costume or pin something to my shirt. No one would guess my costume because I wouldn't even know!! Well, that would be silly. So, after a short nap I realized I had to make my costume! After a few minutes of searching through my clothes, I found that I had a number of items in green. I searched the internet for green costumes and found various sexy Green Giants and girly Link look-a-likes before settling on Peter Pan! (and not just any Peter Pan, but one of the very first female Pans, Mary Martin. Oddly specific.)
I even had a Shadow!

Today's Cup
All Hallow's Eve
We're on the cusp of a wonderful holiday. I have always been a fan of Halloween. Recently, I have been picking very obscure characters or at least being very specific about my costume. There was the 1980's Working Girl business casual where I looked like I had dressed up as my friend who was wearing the same outfit. And then, there is this year; Mary Martin Peter Pan.
The trick to my costumes is to wait until the very last minute. Yesterday, I really had no idea what I was going to wear, let alone how I would create it within two hours time. So, after work and a nap, I found myself thinking; I have all this green and this green coat, hmmmmm... And two hours later, just in time to catch the bus to a friends Halloween party I became Peter Pan! I tried to fly, but only for a second because I got scared.
No Peter Pan is complete without his shadow.

Tea Party
Over the past few weeks I have been revisiting all of the updates on my facebook page. It's not easy going through two years worth of status updates, pictures, and posts. Not to mention, all the links to websites, videos, and stupid pictures on the internet.
But, there is one thing that defines me, one thing that will always grab my attention; beards!
My friend, who shall remain nameless, posted a link to a tea party. No, this is not your cute little children with dolls version, nor the political party, or even a sexy version (although I think it's sexy); no it's a man's tea party. Oh, how I love a good beard.

Musicality 101: Criteria
Most of the time I feel like I am not doing enough. I do not really go out and I rarely go to concerts. The reason I am not an active socialite is because of money. Without the funds to spend on fun, I try to find entertainment for free. When I have money for concerts I find concerts that I know I will enjoy. This means that I have some criteria that equates to a great concert.
One, sound. It probably goes with out saying that the sound a band makes is important. The bands I listen to often, know how to write their own music and lyrics, have a knowledge of music theory, and can play their instruments and sing. Usually, I am drawn to bands that have unique instruments and multiple lead singers.
Two, stage presence. When I am at a concert entertainment is important. Anyone, can get on stage, play some music, and I can sit their and watch you play. However, I like to jump or wiggle, sing along, watch the band move around, and listen to stage banter.
Three, I like the handmade product. T-shirt and poster artwork made by a friend on the band is BIG part of going to a concert. Some of the best concerts I have been to, have buttons, stickers, flipbooks, or bags. Four, the venue. I am really picky when it comes to the type of venue. My preference is an intimate, sitting room venue with small speakers.
It really is the unique garage bands playing in small venue with outrageous and kinky stage performers, that have beautiful sound both vocal and instrumental that get my attention and money.
Recently, I started following this band from Chicago. The lead singer, Craig Benzine, is YouTube celebrity, WheezyWaiter. About a year ago, I subscribed to his YouTube channel and started watching every video. I learned about Driftless Pony Club through his YouTube videos. The first DPC concert I attended was in Chicago at my favorite concert hall Schubas. Schubas is a small tavern with a restaurant, Harmony Grill, and a very intimate concert hall. Every time I have been at Schubas the food has been great, the drinks even better, and the bands surprising. Even the bands I thought I liked somehow beat my expectations.
What I like most about DPC's lead guitar and lead vocal, Craig Benzine, is that he is a YouTube celebrity, but he doesn't make that the main focus of the band. He definitely uses his popularity to keep his fans informed and this inevitably draws a crowd of Beardlovers (WheezyWaiter's YouTube audience's name), but it doesn't take away from the band's performance. Admittedly, I have attended these concerts to get a look at WheezyWaiter and possibly the opportunity to talk with him, get a picture, and an autograph. However, when I am listening to DPC's album Buckminster or watching them perform, I find myself jumping and wiggling, singing along, and enjoying great entertainment!

Design*Sponge
Grace Bonney of Design*Sponge is one of my heroines. She has grown her blog from a tradition of truthful writing and basic aesthetics to this nationally (if not, internationally!)recognized authority in the design community. I think my favorite part of her is the personality of her blog, the community, and especially the content.
Most recently she posted an blog entry to a Documentary Herb & Dorothy. While working at the Milwaukee Art Museum I have been fortunate enough to be a part of the Herb & Dorothy donation. Last fall, the MAM exhibited some of the 50 works. It was a very sweet exhibition and the Vogel's story is a compelling story.
If you have a chance to watch this Documentary, please do it!

Crush
Well, It's official. I have a whole new fascination for Boy/Girl Bands. A couple of weeks ago I found out that there were Korean, Japanese, etc... bands with 10+ members. When I was growing up the big name bands that every girl had a crush on were Backstreet Boys, N'Sync, and Hanson; and every the group of girls I spent time with wanted to be the Spice Girls. This teenage attraction did not spark my interest, however; I did go as Sporty Spice for Halloween, but only because I was able to wear my hair really short and put on my uncle's army uniform. Yep, I was a real tom-boy.
Anyway, I am finding that I feel like a teenage girl all over again when I see and hear K-Pop bands such as Super Junior and Girls Generation.

The Jealous Curator
A long-time friend moved to Oregon for graduate school nearly two years ago. The two of us were inseparable during our undergraduate years, until I graduated college and moved to Milwaukee, WI. It's not that I moved so far from college that it became impossible to meet frequently; it is the plain boring fact that life got in the way. I was always too poor and the fact that I didn't own a car didn't help either. She was busy with a full course load and work. Thus, our daily meetings came to an end. To make a long story short our correspondence has been limited due to my work schedule and lack of social life and her graduate studies and her social life. Most of our correspondences have been through facebook. This is not a bad thing, though facebook does not lend to a deeper conversation about life, love, or in this instance aesthetics. I submit to this fact of social media based correspondence. We are meant to store these short conversational tid-bits and wait until we can discuss these wall posts in great detail. Today, I received a little message that was simply this link, which led me to a much greater discovery.
